Suzuki roshi

It is not preparation for something else. Mente zen, mente di principiante. Suzuki became Suzuki Roshi and started his morning sittings and practices at Soko-Ji in San Francisco’s expanding counterculture movement.

Suzuki Roshi was really fascinated by the response of Western disciples and their enthusiasm to know everything about Zen Buddhism and meditation.

You can find the complete transcripts of each. Suzuki Roshi explains that the purpose of Shikantaza — a practice commonly known as “just sitting” — is to actualize emptiness and move beyond our interpretations of reality. When we remember there is another world beyond our limited experience, we can empty ourselves of preconceived ideas and accept things as they are.

In fact, Suzuki Roshi was one of the most influential Zen teachers of his time. The book became the most successful treatise on Buddhism in English, selling more than one million copies to date.

Yet, we all know that no human is like this. Suzuki or any other Zen master only looks this way if we avoid looking at their real life. But that is the way that Suzuki , Baker and all roshi are presented within the tradition, that is, as idealized reflections of the original truth and perfection of the Buddha. Share with your friends. SHUNRYU SUZUKI ROSHI was a Japanese Zen priest who belonged to the Soto lineage.

Already a respected Zen master in Japan, he was impressed by the seriousness and quality of “beginner’s mind” among Americans he met who were interested in Zen and decided to settle there. On the drive back to San Francisco, he and his party stopped at a retreat center near San Juan Bautista where Soen Nakagawa roshi was in the last hours of a weeklong sesshin (meditation retreat). Suzuki Roshi presents the basics—from the details of posture and breathing in zazen to the perception of nonduality—in a way that is not only remarkably clear, but that also resonates with the joy of insight from the first to the last page. Suzuki Roshi once said that life was “like stepping onto a boat which is about to sail out to sea and sink. I like his perspective.

We don’t need assurances about rosy futures. We’re here briefly and then we’re gone. What use are we to make of our brief but precious lives? At one of the high points in my life, at the tender age of 1 I met Suzuki Roshi at Tassajara Zen Mountain Center in California. My mother, Carol Star Safer, a visionary artist and spiritual seeker, had heard about his monastery from her artist friends.

She suggested we go there for a “family vacation! Renunciation is not giving up the things of the worl but accepting that they go away.
